Semazic contains semaglutide, which is a GLP-1 analogue that shares 94% of its sequence with human GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, semaglutide selectively binds to and activates the GLP-1 receptor, leading to:
- Insulin secretion when blood glucose levels are high.
- Reduction of glucagon secretion to prevent further glucose elevation.
- A slight delay in gastric emptying, which also helps control blood sugar.
In hypoglycemia, semaglutide reduces insulin secretion but does not impair glucagon secretion. Additionally, semaglutide promotes weight loss by reducing appetite and helps reduce body fat.
For Diabetes:
Improving Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes:
Semazic is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to enhance blood sugar control in adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Type 2 Diabetes:
It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks and strokes) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who already have established cardiovascular disease.
For Obesity:
- Chronic Weight Management:
Semazic is prescribed as part of a weight management plan, combining a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or those with overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) along with at least one weight-related comorbid condition (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia).
