Montelukast functions as a selective, orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist, targeting the CysLT1 receptor. Cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), derived from arachidonic acid and released by cells such as mast cells and eosinophils, contribute to the inflammation seen in asthma and allergic rhinitis. They promote bronchoconstriction, mucosal edema, and altered cellular responses. By blocking their receptor, Montelukast helps alleviate airway inflammation and its associated symptoms.
