Description

Generic Name: Ambroxol Hydrochloride 15/5mg/ml

Manufacturer: Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications

Ambolyt is used to treat a variety of respiratory tract conditions brought on by an abundance of mucus. It functions by making mucus in the lungs, windpipe, and nose thinner and looser so that it is easier to cough out.

Pharmacology

Bromhexine has a metabolite called ambroxol. It has pectolytic (liquefies secretions) and microkinetic (improves mucus transport) properties. Ambroxol increases the amount of mucus secreted by stimulating the serous cells of the bronchial glands that produce mucous membranes. The depolymerization and splitting of mucoprotein and mucopolysaccharide fibers that the mucolytic effect causes results in a decrease in mucus viscosity. Mucus expectoration is made easier, and breathing is significantly made easier. Alveolar cells are stimulated by ambroxol to produce phospholipids for surfactants. The anti-inflammatory properties of ambroxol. It enhances airway patency in COPD patients. In addition to these, Ambroxol demonstrates antioxidant activity. The preparation’s good tolerability makes long-term use possible.

Dosage & Administration

Average daily dose (preferably after meal):

Syrup:

  • 2 to 5 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoonful)
  • 3–2 times per day
  • 5 ml for ages 5 to 10 (1 teaspoonful) 3–2 times per day
  • 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) three times per day for those over 10 and for adults.

Interaction

Cardioactive glycosides, corticosteroids, bronchodilators, diuretics, and antibiotics do not interact with Ambolyt 100 ml (normally used in the treatment of bronchopulmonary affections). However, Ambroxol shouldn’t be taken along with antitussives (such as Codeine) because it may prevent mucus from being expectorated after Ambroxol has liquefied it.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine.

Side Effects

Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain, and gastric fullness may occur occasionally. Rarely allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Teratogenic and fetal toxicity studies have shown no harmful effect of Ambroxol. However, it is advised not to use it during pregnancy, especially in the 1st trimester. Safety during lactation has not been established.

Precautions & Warnings

Ambolyt 100 ml should be given cautiously to patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration or convulsive disorders. Patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency should take it with caution.

Storage Conditions

Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
