Amit contains Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) known for its sedative and anticholinergic effects. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of neurotransmitters such as noradrenaline and serotonin, enhancing their levels in the brain. The drug is quickly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak plasma levels within 2 to 12 hours, and is mainly excreted via urine in the form of metabolites.
Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, Amitriptyline is thought to act by blocking the membrane pump responsible for the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the central nervous system. This results in increased availability of these mood-regulating neurotransmitters at the synaptic cleft, which is believed to alleviate depressive symptoms. Its pain-relieving effects may or may not be directly related to its antidepressant action.
