Atorvastatin is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which plays a key role in cholesterol synthesis by converting HMG-CoA to mevalonate. By blocking this enzyme, atorvastatin reduces cholesterol production in the liver and increases LDL receptor activity on hepatocyte surfaces, enhancing LDL uptake and clearance from the bloodstream.
Colostat is prescribed along with dietary control to help lower elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B), and triglycerides when lifestyle measures alone are not sufficient.
It is used in:
- Patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia should reduce total and LDL cholesterol
- Patients with mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Type IIa and IIb) should reduce cholesterol and triglycerides
- Patients with hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson Type IV) should lower their high triglyceride levels
- Patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia (Fredrickson Type III)
- Reduction of cardiovascular risk in patients with coronary artery disease who have elevated LDL cholesterol
- Management of elevated cholesterol in patients with diabetes mellitus or post–renal transplantation dyslipidemia
