Prazosin lowers total peripheral vascular resistance by selectively blocking postsynaptic alpha-1 adrenoreceptors in vascular smooth muscle. It effectively reduces blood pressure in both standing and lying positions, with a greater effect on diastolic pressure. Unlike some other antihypertensive drugs, discontinuation does not lead to a rebound increase in blood pressure.
In congestive heart failure, Prazosin works by decreasing left ventricular filling pressure, reducing cardiac impedance, and enhancing cardiac output. It does not cause reflex tachycardia and has minimal impact on blood pressure in normotensive individuals.
For Raynaud’s disease, it decreases the severity and frequency of symptoms. Additionally, at lower doses, it relaxes the smooth muscle of the prostate and urethra, improving urinary flow in men with BPH. Clinical studies have shown that Prazosin does not adversely affect lipid profiles.

Hypertension:
Prazosin is prescribed for all levels of primary (essential) and secondary hypertension, regardless of cause. It can be used as a standalone treatment or combined with diuretics and/or other antihypertensive medications to achieve optimal results. Long-term use does not negatively impact renal blood flow or glomerular filtration rate, making it safe for hypertensive patients with kidney impairment.
Left Ventricular Failure:
Prazosin is used for managing left ventricular failure. It is particularly beneficial for patients who have not responded adequately or have become resistant to conventional therapies, including diuretics and cardiac glycosides.
Raynaud’s Phenomenon & Raynaud’s Disease:
Prazosin is effective in treating Raynaud’s disease and Raynaud’s phenomenon, helping to reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of attacks.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH):
Prazosin is used to alleviate urinary obstruction symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can also serve as a temporary treatment for patients awaiting prostate surgery.
