Amlodipine belongs to the dihydropyridine class of calcium channel blockers and has a prolonged duration of action. It acts on heart muscle cells, the heart’s electrical conduction system, and vascular smooth muscle cells. Its primary effect is to relax and widen blood vessels, which reduces peripheral resistance, lowers blood pressure, decreases cardiac workload, and improves blood flow through the coronary arteries. These effects help increase oxygen delivery to the heart and improve cardiac output.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Amlopin is effective when used alone to treat essential hypertension. It may also be prescribed alongside other blood pressure-lowering medications for better control.
Chronic Stable Angina
Amlopin is used to manage chronic stable angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart). It can be taken alone or in combination with other antianginal medications.
Vasospastic Angina
Amlopin is indicated for patients with confirmed or suspected vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina. It may be used either as a single therapy or together with other antianginal drugs.
Pregnancy
- Classified as Pregnancy Category C.
- Adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking.
- Use only when the expected benefits outweigh potential risks to the fetus.
Breastfeeding
- It is unknown whether amlodipine passes into breast milk.
- Breastfeeding should generally be discontinued while taking Amlopin unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider.
Special caution is recommended in:
- Patients with liver disease
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding mothers
Close monitoring and careful dose adjustment may be necessary in these groups.
