Teana Plus (Telmisartan and Hydrochlorothiazide) is used for managing hypertension (high blood pressure). It can be taken alone or combined with other antihypertensive drugs. By lowering blood pressure, it helps reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks.
Telmisartan: Angiotensin II, formed from angiotensin I, is a key agent in the renin-angiotensin system that causes vasoconstriction and stimulates aldosterone release, increasing blood pressure. Telmisartan works by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, thus preventing vasoconstriction and reducing blood pressure. It selectively targets the AT1 receptor and has a much stronger affinity for it compared to the AT2 receptor.
Hydrochlorothiazide: This thiazide diuretic increases the excretion of sodium and chloride from the kidneys. It indirectly lowers blood pressure by reducing plasma volume, which raises renin and aldosterone levels, leading to increased potassium loss. The addition of an ARB like Telmisartan helps counterbalance the potassium loss caused by hydrochlorothiazide.
