Verapamil Hydrochloride
- Hypertension (High blood pressure)
- Angina pectoris (chest pain of cardiac origin)
- Supraventricular arrhythmias, including:
- Atrial fibrillation and flutter with rapid conduction (except WPW syndrome)
- Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia
- Extrasystoles (ectopic heartbeats)
- Prevention of re-infarction post-myocardial infarction
- Acute coronary insufficiency
- Tachycardia in halothane anaesthesia with adrenaline
Verapamil blocks calcium entry into cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells. This:
- Relaxes blood vessels → reduces blood pressure
- Decreases myocardial oxygen demand → relieves angina
- Slows conduction through the AV node → controls arrhythmias
- Prevents coronary artery spasms and reduces afterload
