Phenoxymethylpenicillin (Penicillin V) is an acid-stable penicillin derivative that is absorbed from the upper small intestine. The potassium salt form provides optimal absorption. Although it may be taken with meals, maximum absorption occurs when administered on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals).
It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis. Compared to Penicillin G, it has the advantage of resistance to gastric acid inactivation, making it suitable for oral use against Gram-positive pathogens.
Biopen VK (Phenoxymethylpenicillin Potassium)
- Biopen VK is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections caused by penicillin-sensitive organisms that respond to oral therapy, such as:
- Ear, nose, and throat infections: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, otitis media, sinusitis.
- Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchopneumonia.
- Infections due to Group A β-hemolytic streptococci: scarlet fever, erysipelas, rheumatic fever.
- Skin and soft tissue infections: pyodermia, furunculosis, phlegmon, erysipeloid, erythema migrans (if penicillin-susceptible).
- Lymphadenitis and lymphangitis of bacterial origin.
Oral and dental infections: inflammatory infiltrates, delayed dentition (stages II & III), antral fistulae, or secondary bacterial infection of viral gingivitis/stomatitis caused by Gram-positive bacteria.
Prophylactic use:
Prevention of scarlet fever and recurrence of rheumatic fever.
Prevention of bacterial infection after dental or oral surgical procedures in high-risk patients (e.g., those with congenital cardiac defects, artificial valves, or history of rheumatic endocarditis).
In some cases, a combination with another suitable antibiotic may be required.
