Odazyth is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
Lower respiratory tract infections:
- Bronchitis
- Pneumonia
Upper respiratory tract infections:
- Sinusitis
- Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
Other infections:
- Otitis media
- Skin and soft tissue infections
Sexually transmitted infections:
- Non-gonococcal urethritis in men
- Cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis in women
- Azithromycin is acid-stable and can be taken orally without protection from gastric acid.
- Absorption is greater on an empty stomach; peak concentration occurs in 2–3 hours.
- High concentrations accumulate in phagocytes, which transport the drug to infection sites and release it during phagocytosis.
- Tissue concentrations can exceed plasma levels by over 50 times due to lipid solubility and ion trapping.
- Half-life: Approximately 68 hours, allowing extended bacteriostatic effects from a single dose.
- Major elimination route is biliary excretion; about 6% appears unchanged in urine over a week.
