Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic derived from Actinoplanes teichomyceticus. It is supplied as a sterile, pyrogen-free ivory-white powder that dissolves in water to form a clear solution. Teicoplanin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, binding specifically to D-alanyl-D-alanine residues in peptidoglycan, thereby disrupting bacterial growth. This mechanism differs from beta-lactam antibiotics.
Teconin is used for treating infections in both adults and children, including:
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Hospital-acquired pneumonia
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Infective endocarditis

It is also prescribed as an alternative oral therapy for diarrhea and colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. For optimal results, Teconin may be combined with other antibacterial agents as needed.
