Rifaximin is a semisynthetic antibiotic derived from rifamycin. Unlike many other oral antibiotics, it is minimally absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream. Rifaximin works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis through its action on the beta subunit of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. It demonstrates broad-spectrum bactericidal activity, effective against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, as well as aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, similar to rifamycin.
Hepaximin 200 is an antibiotic used to treat hepatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by the liver’s inability to remove toxins from the blood, which can lead to brain damage. Symptoms of this condition include agitation, confusion, muscle issues, difficulty speaking, and, in severe cases, coma. Additionally, Hepaximin 200 is used for treating infectious diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in both adults and children.
This medicine can be taken alone or in combination with other medications. It can be taken with or without food, but it is best to take it at the same time each day to maximize its benefits. Always follow your doctor’s prescribed dose and treatment duration. Do not stop the medication prematurely, as this may cause the infection to return and become harder to treat.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headache, which are typically mild and resolve as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist or worsen. It’s normal for this medicine to cause a reddish discoloration of urine, which is harmless.
