Ramosetron Hydrochloride is a selective serotonin (5-HT3) receptor antagonist. Serotonin plays a key role in regulating gastrointestinal motility, secretion, and sensation. Stress and increased intestinal pressure can trigger serotonin release, which stimulates 5-HT3 receptors in the gut, leading to faster intestinal movement and diarrhea.
Ramosetron works by blocking these 5-HT3 receptors, thereby:
- Slowing down intestinal transit
- Reducing abnormal bowel movements
- Decreasing visceral sensitivity and abdominal pain
Additionally, by inhibiting serotonin activity in the gut, it may help prevent nausea and vomiting associated with certain conditions.
Ramogut is prescribed for the management of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D).
