Daprotab 6 is prescribed for anemia due to CKD in adult patients undergoing dialysis for at least four months.
However, it is not recommended for:
- Immediate anemia correction as a substitute for blood transfusions
- Patients with CKD-related anemia who are not on dialysis
Daprotab 6 is a hypoxia-inducible factor, prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI). The function of HIF-PH enzymes regulates intracellular levels of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), a key transcription factor responsible for activating genes involved in erythropoiesis (red blood cell production). The HIF pathway plays a crucial role in the body’s adaptive response to low oxygen levels by increasing red blood cell production.
By reversibly inhibiting HIF-PH, Daprodustat promotes a well-coordinated erythropoietic response, which includes:
- Increased levels of endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) in the blood
- Regulation of iron transporter proteins
- Reduction of hepcidin, a protein that hinders iron availability and is elevated during inflammation in chronic kidney disease (CKD)
This process enhances iron availability, boosts hemoglobin (Hb) synthesis, and leads to an increase in red blood cell mass.
