Description

A-Kit is an emergency contraceptive designed to prevent unwanted pregnancy. This pill contains synthetic progestin, which stimulates the menstrual cycle. Unwanted pregnancies can occur due to failure of contraceptives or unprotected intercourse.

Unwanted pregnancies can be stressful and can hamper a woman’s health. However, it is considered better to prevent an unwanted pregnancy than going for an abortion at a later stage.

A-Kit belongs to a category of gynecological medications known as abortifacients, utilized for terminating pregnancies 63 days from the start of the last menstrual period. It’s also effective in the second trimester of pregnancy.

This kit comprises two drugs: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the effects of progesterone, which is necessary for sustaining a pregnancy, while Misoprostol induces contractions and cervix dilation, facilitating pregnancy expulsion. Together, they cause pregnancy termination and are administered sequentially for medical abortion.

Typically, a medical abortion requires 2-3 visits to a healthcare provider, involving medication administration and confirmation of pregnancy termination:

  • Day 1: Counseling and examination, followed by a single dose of mifepristone (200 mcg).
  • Day 2 to 3: Return to the clinic for Misoprostol (800 mcg), either orally or vaginally.
  • Day 7 to 14: Follow-up to confirm abortion completion; additional visits may be needed if abortion is incomplete.

Potential side effects include nausea, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, infection, dizziness, and uterine bleeding, which usually resolve over time. Persistent vaginal bleeding warrants immediate medical attention. It’s crucial not to abruptly stop A-Kit without consulting a doctor to avoid incomplete abortion.

Inform your doctor of any relevant medical history, such as ectopic pregnancy, contraceptive use, breastfeeding, bleeding disorders, or heart conditions. Avoid strenuous activities to prevent excessive bleeding, and ultrasound may be used to confirm abortion completion, as lack of bleeding doesn’t necessarily indicate completion.
