Milk thistle, known for the white veins on its large prickly leaves, contains an active ingredient called silymarin, extracted from the plant’s seeds, which is believed to possess antioxidant properties. Sold in various forms like oral capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts, milk thistle is predominantly used to address liver conditions.
Hepanor (Milk thistle) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of various liver conditions such as liver disease (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), liver cirrhosis, infectious hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis, liver disease secondary to diabetes mellitus, toxicity of narcotics, fatty liver, and jaundice.
The pharmacology of silymarin involves hepatoprotective actions, stimulating RNA polymerase-A, enhancing protein synthesis, and aiding in the regeneration and repair of liver cells.
Silymarin’s antioxidant properties help prevent toxic substances from entering liver cells by stabilizing their outer membrane. It also has membrane-stabilizing effects, protecting hepatocytes from damage caused by various factors such as alcohol, viral infections, acetaminophen, and environmental pollutants.
Dosage and administration instructions recommend adults take 1 to 3 capsules 2 to 3 times daily, or as directed by a physician. It is not recommended for children without a physician’s advice.
Possible interactions include reduced lipid peroxidation when used concomitantly with certain medications. It is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to silymarin.
Hepanor is generally well tolerated, with occasional mild laxative effects observed. However, caution is advised during pregnancy and lactation, as there is limited experience with the use of silymarin during these periods.
