Prokind is used for:
- Adjunct treatment of gastric and duodenal peptic ulcers
- Relief of gastritis symptoms (e.g., stomach upset, GI bleeding, blood in vomit or stool, persistent abdominal pain)
- Symptomatic management of diarrhea linked to irritable bowel syndrome, spastic colon, acute enterocolitis, and other functional GI disorders
- Urinary incontinence
- Control of excessive salivation and bedwetting (enuresis)
- Improvement of lactose intolerance
- Prevention of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
Prokind contains Propantheline Bromide, which works via two mechanisms:
- Anticholinergic (antimuscarinic) effect – blocks acetylcholine receptors on smooth muscle, reducing muscle stimulation.
- Direct musculotropic effect – relaxes smooth muscle directly.
This dual action reduces GI motility, decreases gastric acid secretion, and lowers pharyngeal, tracheal, and bronchial secretions. It also reduces saliva, sweat, and pancreatic juice production.
Symptoms range from intensified side effects (nausea, vomiting) to CNS changes (restlessness, psychosis), circulatory problems (flushing, low BP, circulatory collapse), respiratory failure, and paralysis.
