Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, an imidazoline derivative and sympathomimetic amine, acts as a direct agonist at α-adrenoceptors, without any effect on β-adrenoceptors. When applied topically to the nasal mucosa, it induces rapid and long-lasting vasoconstriction of arterioles, reducing blood flow and mucosal swelling. This results in improved nasal airway potency and better drainage of the nasal sinuses.
