Phoscon is indicated for:
- Management of elevated serum phosphorus levels in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are undergoing dialysis.
- Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults with CKD who are not on dialysis.
Phoscon contains ferric citrate. In the gastrointestinal tract, ferric iron binds with dietary phosphate and forms ferric phosphate, an insoluble compound that is eliminated through the stool. By reducing the absorption of phosphate from the gastrointestinal tract, it helps lower serum phosphorus levels.
Some of the ferric iron is converted into the ferrous form in the gastrointestinal tract and absorbed through intestinal cells. Once in the bloodstream, iron binds to transferrin and can subsequently be utilized for hemoglobin production.
