Nepado belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) class. It works by blocking the production of chemical mediators called prostaglandins, which are responsible for pain, swelling, and inflammation in the eye.
- Use as prescribed for post-surgical eye pain and inflammation
- Apply gentle pressure on the inner corner of the eye for about 1 minute after use
- Typically used for 4–6 weeks after surgery
- Wait 5–10 minutes between different eye medications
- A brief stinging sensation may occur

Nepado is an ophthalmic pain-relieving medication used to manage pain and inflammation following cataract surgery. Patients should wash their hands thoroughly before applying the drops. Use only the dose prescribed by your doctor and allow about five minutes between each eye drop if multiple medications are being used. Contact lens wearers should remove lenses before instillation and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to prevent contamination and possible infection.
Some temporary side effects may include eye irritation, burning sensation, blurred vision, watery eyes, or dryness. These symptoms are usually mild and resolve on their own, but if they persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought.
Before using Nepado, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions and all medications you are currently taking. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use.
Side Effects
- Common: application site irritation
- Other possible effects: eye discomfort, redness, itching, watery or dry eyes
Dosage (Adults)
- For cataract surgery pain/inflammation: 1 drop 3 times daily starting 1 day before surgery, continued on the day of surgery, and for up to 2 weeks post-operatively
- Higher strength regimens may include once-daily dosing with an additional pre-surgical dose
- For diabetic patients (prevention of macular edema): 1 drop 3 times daily starting 1 day before surgery and continued for up to 6 weeks after surgery
Pediatric Use
- Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children under 10 years
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nepafenac or other NSAIDs or any formulation ingredients
Mechanism
Nepafenac is a prodrug that is converted in the eye to amfenac, which inhibits prostaglandin synthesis and reduces inflammation.
Precautions
- Use cautiously in patients with bleeding tendencies or those on medications affecting bleeding time
- Use with caution during breastfeeding
Drug Interactions
- Topical corticosteroids may increase the risk of complications when used together
- Increased risk of bleeding with drugs that affect clotting or prolong bleeding time
Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light. The bottle is to be closed strongly immediately after use. Keep away from the reach of children.
