Nitrovas SR is prescribed for the prevention of angina pectoris. It is not suitable for immediate relief during an acute anginal attack due to its delayed onset of action.
Nitroglycerin, the active component, works by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, resulting in dilation of veins and arteries. This venous dilation decreases blood return to the heart (reducing preload), while arterial dilation lowers systemic vascular resistance (reducing afterload). Both effects help decrease cardiac workload and oxygen demand, thereby relieving angina symptoms.
