Perkirol is a dopamine agonist indicated for:
- Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease – to relieve symptoms and improve motor function.
- Moderate-to-severe primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) – to reduce discomfort and improve sleep.
Ropinirole is a non-ergoline dopamine agonist with its highest affinity at D3 receptors, located in the limbic system, which may account for some neuropsychiatric effects.
- In Parkinson’s disease, its action is thought to result from selective stimulation of dopamine D2 receptors within the caudate-putamen system, which regulates movement.
- In RLS, while the exact mechanism is unclear, it is believed to act through dopamine receptor stimulation.
Ropinirole shows negligible activity at peripheral α2-adrenoceptors, 5HT-1 receptors, benzodiazepine receptors, or GABA receptors, and no affinity for D1-like receptors.
