- Levodopa: A precursor to dopamine, levodopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted into dopamine, which helps alleviate Parkinson’s symptoms.
- Carbidopa: When taken orally, levodopa is rapidly converted to dopamine outside the brain, limiting its availability for the central nervous system. Carbidopa prevents this premature breakdown, ensuring more levodopa reaches the brain.
