Description

P/DROP, Generic Name: Simethicone, Manufacturer: Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Simethicone is a good and efficient antiflatulent. It treats flatulence, abdominal distention, fullness, gas, and windy colic. It is used to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of gas in the digestive tract. Such gas is usually generated by swallowing too much air or consuming foods that disagree. Simethicone drops are especially useful in babies since they work in the stomach and intestines. Simethicone facilitates the release and elimination of gas by belching or passing flatus.

Large bowel preparation: The addition of Simethicone to a polyethylene glycol bowel preparation improves symptoms prior to examination in the therapy of foamy detergent ingestion.

Poisoning treatment: Simethicone has been used anecdotally as an antifoaming agent in the treatment of accidental ingestion of foaming detergents.

Pharmacology

Simethicone is used as an antiflatulent to treat symptoms associated with gas, such as upper GI bloating, pressure, fullness, or a filled feeling. Simeticone’s therapeutic usage is based on its antifoaming characteristics. Its antifoaming effect helps to alleviate flatulence by dispersing and inhibiting the development of mucous-encased gas pockets in the GI tract.

Simeticone works in the stomach and intestines to alter the surface tension of gas bubbles, allowing them to coalesce; as a result, gas is released and removed more readily by belching or passing flatus. Simeticone helps in the evacuation of gas from the gastrointestinal system and can be used to alleviate postoperative gas symptoms. Simeticone can also be administered before to gastroscopy to improve vision and prior to intestinal radiography to decrease gas shadows.

Dosage & Administration

Take after meals and at bedtime. Can be given with infant’s feeds. Shake the bottle well before each use.

Children less than 2 years of age: 20 mg (0.3 ml Simethicone Paediatric Drops) 4 times daily up to 240 mg/day (3.6 ml Simethicone Paediatric Drops).

Children 2-12 years of age: 40 mg (0.6 ml Simethicone Paediatric Drops) 4 times daily.

Adults:

  • 40-125 mg (0.6 ml-1.9 ml Simethicone Paediatric Drops) 4 times daily, up to 500 mg/day (7.5 ml Simethicone Paediatric Drops) or
  • 1-3 Simethicone chewable tablets; 4 times daily, up to 500 mg/day (12 Simethicone chewable tablets).

Interaction

There is no evidence that Simethicone alters the impact of other medications. Antacids that absorb the Silicone, such as Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Carbonate, decrease the defoaming action of Simethicone.

Side Effects

Simethicone is physiologically inert, and no adverse effects have been reported following oral use.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Women who are pregnant: There are no data that show any negative consequences.

Lactating mother: It has not been shown that simethicone is excreted in breast milk, therefore it is highly improbable.

Anti-dyspeptic/Carminatives
