Feelfree Gel (1.8%+1%+0.4%) is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in females of reproductive potential for use as an on-demand method of contraception.Â
The combination of lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate is used as a contraceptive method to inhibit conception. This mixture is typically applied as a gel using an applicator into the cervix before any vaginal touch or sexual activity begins.
The mechanism of action involves multiple factors:
- Decreasing sperm migration: The acidic environment created by lactic acid and citric acid lowers the pH in the vagina, which can immobilize or inhibit sperm movement, reducing the likelihood of sperm reaching the egg.
- Depressing pH: Potassium bitartrate, also known as cream of tartar, further contributes to lowering the pH of the vaginal environment, creating conditions less favorable for sperm survival and motility.
