Erectile dysfunction (ED) specifically refers to trouble getting or keeping an erection, despite having a healthy sex drive. This issue often has a physical basis and affects about 1 in 5 men, becoming more common with age. At age 40, around 5% of men experience ED, but this rises to 15% by age 70. However, ED can be treated at any age.
ED occurs when blood flow to the penis is restricted, preventing the two chambers (corpora cavernosa) from filling and expanding. This process is initiated by impulses from the brain and genital nerves. Chronic conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, and multiple sclerosis can lead to ED by affecting blood flow. Men with diabetes are particularly at risk, being two to three times more likely to develop ED, often 10 to 15 years earlier than men without diabetes. Proper blood sugar control can mitigate this risk.
Lab tests, including blood cell counts, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and liver tests, can help diagnose ED by revealing underlying medical conditions.
