Ferokid Syrup is an oral iron supplement formulated for infants, children, and adults to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia caused by inadequate iron levels in the body. The special form of iron used in this preparation is designed to be gentler on the stomach and does not typically stain the teeth.
Ferokid is indicated for:
- Iron deficiency anemia, particularly in children
- Iron supplementation during pregnancy when other oral iron products are poorly tolerated
- Anemia associated with rheumatoid arthritis
Ferokid contains Sodium Feredetate, an iron chelate in which iron is bound to EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid). Unlike conventional iron salts, the iron remains in a non-ionized form, reducing the likelihood of tooth staining and gastrointestinal irritation.
After ingestion, the iron complex is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract, releasing elemental iron for absorption. Once absorbed:
- Approximately 60–70% is utilized for hemoglobin production.
- The remainder is stored as ferritin or hemosiderin in body tissues.
- Small amounts are incorporated into myoglobin and iron-containing enzymes or transported by transferrin in the bloodstream.
The EDTA component is minimally absorbed and is largely eliminated unchanged.
