3RD Cef is a broad-spectrum, orally active third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It exerts bactericidal action against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms and remains stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes.
Cefixime, a semisynthetic third-generation cephalosporin, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. It maintains strong resistance against beta-lactamase degradation, rendering it effective even against some resistant bacterial strains. Bioavailability is approximately 40–50%, regardless of food intake.
3RD Cef is prescribed for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI): Otitis media and other infections, particularly where resistance to standard antibiotics or treatment failure poses a significant risk.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Including bronchitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) include cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis.
It is effective against pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp., Haemophilus influenzae (both beta-lactamase positive and negative), Moraxella catarrhalis, and Enterobacter spp.
