Description

Agotin is prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults, particularly for patients who do not respond well to, or cannot tolerate, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is also used to prevent relapse of depression.

Agomelatine, the active ingredient in Agotin, is a melatonergic agonist (MT1 and MT2 receptors) and a 5-HT2C receptor antagonist. Unlike other antidepressants, it does not affect monoamine uptake or bind to adrenergic, histaminergic, cholinergic, dopaminergic, or benzodiazepine receptors. Agomelatine helps in resynchronizing disrupted circadian rhythms in animal models. It also increases the release of noradrenaline and dopamine in the frontal cortex, without affecting serotonin levels.
