DHEA is a natural hormone produced in the body, which is used in the biosynthesis of male and female sex hormones.
Current evidence does not strongly support routine use of DHEA for many conditions. However, it may have potential roles in:
- Diminished ovarian reserve (in assisted reproduction)
- Selected cases of osteoporosis in elderly women
- Mild systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) (as third-line or adjunct therapy per CANMAT guidelines)
- Possible anxiolytic effects (limited evidence)
Not well-supported for:
- Cognitive improvement in elderly patients
- Physical strength enhancement
- Postmenopausal symptom management
- Hyperlipidemia or insulin resistance
- Schizophrenia
- Cancer treatment
Mechanism of Action
DHEA and its sulfate form (DHEAS):
- Act as neurosteroids influencing central nervous system activity
- Function as a noncompetitive antagonist of GABA receptors
- Act as a positive modulator of NMDA receptors
- Exhibit neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive properties
After oral administration, peak serum levels are typically reached within 60–480 minutes.
