Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic penicillin effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Amoxicillin is stable in gastric acid, well absorbed orally, and achieves peak plasma concentrations within 1–2 hours. It is widely distributed throughout body tissues and fluids.
Amotid is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible β-lactamase–negative microorganisms, including:
- Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections: Otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and laryngitis
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, lung abscess, empyema, and bronchiectasis
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Cellulitis, carbuncles, furunculosis, infected wounds, and abscesses
- Genitourinary Tract Infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, and urethritis
- Venereal Diseases: Acute uncomplicated gonorrhea
- Dental Infections: Short-term therapy for dental abscesses
- Peptic Ulcer Disease: In combination with clarithromycin and lansoprazole (triple therapy) to eradicate Helicobacter pylori and reduce recurrence of duodenal ulcer
- Prophylaxis: Prevention of bacterial endocarditis in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions
