It should complement standard treatments like surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, not replace them. No severe unexpected side effects have been reported, even at doses up to 1600 mg/day.

Megestrol Acetate is a synthetic antineoplastic and progestational agent. Its mechanism in treating endometrial carcinoma is unclear but may involve inhibiting pituitary gonadotropin production, leading to reduced estrogen secretion. For breast carcinoma, it modifies the action of other steroid hormones and exerts direct cytotoxic effects on tumor cells.Megestrol suppresses hormone-dependent breast cancer cells and blocks the stimulatory effects of estrogen. It works through receptor mechanisms where estrogen enters cells, binds to receptors, and alters normal cell functions. Pharmacologic doses of Megestrol reduce hormone-dependent cancer cells.Absorption: Peak plasma levels occur 2–3 hours after a single 160 mg dose.Half-life: 33–38 hours.Excretion: 66% in urine, 20% in feces.
