Lipid-lowering therapy should be part of a comprehensive approach to reducing atherosclerotic vascular disease risk in individuals with hypercholesterolemia. Medication is recommended alongside dietary modifications when non-drug interventions are insufficient.
- Primary Hyperlipidemia: Atova EZ is prescribed to lower total cholesterol (total-C), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (Apo B), triglycerides (TG), and non-HDL cholesterol, while increasing HDL cholesterol in patients with primary (heterozygous familial and non-familial) hyperlipidemia or mixed hyperlipidemia.
- Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH): Used to lower total-C and LDL-C in patients with HoFH, either as an addition to other cholesterol-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such options are unavailable.
- Atorvastatin: Reduces cholesterol by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, limiting cholesterol production in the liver, and enhancing LDL receptor activity to facilitate LDL removal from the bloodstream.
- Ezetimibe: Lowers cholesterol by inhibiting its absorption in the small intestine via the Niemann-Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) transporter. This mechanism reduces hepatic cholesterol stores and increases cholesterol clearance from the blood, complementing statin activity.
