Lactulose is used in constipation and Hepatic encephalopathy. It may also be used to treat and prevent complications of liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy).
Avolac Oral Solution contains Lactulose, which is classified as a laxative and is used to treat constipation characterized by infrequent bowel movements and hard, dry stools. Additionally, it is prescribed for hepatic encephalopathy, a condition where liver disease leads to a decline in brain function, causing symptoms such as confusion, tremors, and decreased consciousness, which may progress to hepatic coma.
Avolac Oral Solution is not recommended for patients with serious genetic disorders like galactosemia, acute inflammatory bowel disease, bowel blockage (apart from regular constipation), gastrointestinal perforation, or stomach pain of unknown origin. During the treatment with Avolac Oral Solution, it is essential to stay well-hydrated by consuming about 6 to 8 glasses of fluids daily.
Before taking Avolac Oral Solution, inform your doctor if you have lactose intolerance, diabetes, or Roemheld syndrome. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use Avolac Oral Solution with caution, only if specifically advised by their doctor. While it is generally not recommended for infants and young children, there might be certain circumstances where your child’s doctor may prescribe it.
Elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) should take Avolac Oral Solution with caution, and their doctor may monitor their blood electrolyte levels if the medicine is used for an extended period, especially in patients with poor general health.
