Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) preparations have a long history of use in European medicine, spanning over 2,000 years, particularly in the treatment of liver and biliary tract diseases. According to the US National Formulary, Milk thistle preparations must contain no less than 20% Silymarin, calculated as silybin, silydianin, and silychristin.
