Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. It is stable against β-lactamase enzymes, allowing it to treat infections caused by bacteria resistant to penicillins and some earlier-generation cephalosporins. The oral absorption rate is about 40–50%, and it remains effective whether taken with or without food.
Overdose Effects
There is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment may be used. Cefadyl is not effectively removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. High single doses (up to 2 g) in volunteers produced no significant adverse effects beyond the usual profile.
Cefadyl is an orally active third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes, making it effective against resistant bacterial strains. Cefadyl is indicated for the treatment of acute infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
- Upper respiratory tract infections (URTI): Such as otitis media and other URTIs resistant to common antibiotics or where treatment failure could be risky.
- Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI): Such as bronchitis.
- Urinary tract infections (UTI): Including cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis.
It is effective against pathogens like Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp., Haemophilus influenzae (β-lactamase positive and negative), Moraxella catarrhalis, and Enterobacter spp.
