Clarizol is indicated for the treatment of:
- Dermatomycoses are caused by dermatophytes (e.g., Trichophyton species).
- Fungal skin infections caused by yeasts (Candida species).
- Dermatomycoses due to molds and other fungi.
- Skin conditions complicated by fungal superinfections.
Examples include:- Interdigital mycoses (e.g., athlete’s foot).
- Paronychias (associated with nail infections).
- Skin fold infections.
- Candida vulvitis and balanitis.
- Pityriasis versicolor.
- Erythrasma.
Clarizol is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication effective against dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds, and some gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococci and Trichomonas. It works by altering fungal cell membrane permeability, primarily by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis. At higher concentrations, it also damages the fungal membrane, disrupting growth.
Beyond antifungal activity, clotrimazole impacts intracellular calcium levels by inhibiting sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ ATPase, blocking calcium-dependent potassium channels, and voltage-dependent calcium channels.
