Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells. This buildup of cells leads to scaling on the skin’s surface.

Symptoms:

• Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales
• Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
• Itching, burning, or soreness
• Thickened or ridged nails
• Swollen and stiff joints (psoriatic arthritis)

Types:

1. Plaque psoriasis: The most common form, causing dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.
2. Guttate psoriasis: Often starts in childhood or young adulthood, characterized by small, water-drop-shaped, scaling lesions.
3. Inverse psoriasis: Causes bright red, shiny lesions that appear in skin folds.
4. Pustular psoriasis: Causes white pustules (blisters of noninfectious pus) surrounded by red skin.
5. Erythrodermic psoriasis: The least common type, can cover your entire body with a red, peeling rash that can itch or burn intensely.

The exact cause is unknown, but it’s believed to be related to an immune system problem with T cells and other white blood cells. Genetics and environmental factors can also play a role.

Treatment:

• Topical treatments (corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues)
• Light therapy (phototherapy)
• Systemic medications (oral or injected drugs that affect the whole body)
