Desatrol is used to relieve symptoms associated with seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis. It can help reduce sneezing, runny or itchy nose, nasal congestion, and eye-related symptoms such as itching, watering, and redness. It may also relieve itching of the palate and allergy-related coughing.
Desatrol is also indicated for chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives), helping reduce itching as well as the size and number of hives.
Desloratadine is the main active metabolite of loratadine. It is a long-acting, non-sedating antihistamine that selectively blocks H1 histamine receptors. It also helps reduce the release of histamine from mast cells, thereby controlling allergic symptoms.
Pediatric Drops:
- Children 6–11 months: 2 mL once daily
- Children 1–2 years: 2.5 mL once daily
Syrup:
- Children 6–11 months: 2 mL once daily
- Children 1–5 years: 2.5 mL once daily
- Children 6–11 years: 5 mL once daily
- Adults and children over 12 years: 10 mL once daily
Tablet:
- Adults and children aged 12 years and above: 1 tablet once daily
No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported with desloratadine. However, inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking before starting treatment.
Contraindications
Desatrol should not be used by individuals who are allergic to desloratadine, loratadine, or any ingredient in the formulation.
Side Effects
Some less common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Sore throat (pharyngitis)
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Muscle pain (myalgia)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
The safety of desloratadine during pregnancy has not been firmly established. It should therefore be used during pregnancy only when clearly recommended by a doctor.
Desloratadine can pass into breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should discuss with their doctor whether to continue breastfeeding or discontinue the medicine, considering the importance of treatment.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients with liver or kidney impairment may require a lower starting dose. In adults with hepatic or renal impairment, a starting dose of 5 mg every other day may be considered based on pharmacokinetic data.
Patients with a personal or family history of seizures should inform their doctor before taking desloratadine.
Use in Children & Adolescents
Desloratadine may be used in children and adolescents at age-appropriate doses as directed by a healthcare professional.
Overdose
No clinically significant adverse effects have been reported with overdose. However, if an excessive amount is taken, seek medical advice promptly.
