Ebastine is a long-acting, non-sedating second-generation antihistamine belonging to the piperidine class. It selectively blocks peripheral H1 histamine receptors and is metabolized into its active form, carebastine.
Inhibiting histamine action, it helps prevent allergic reactions and histamine-induced bronchoconstriction while producing minimal sedative and anticholinergic effects.
Ebamine is indicated for:
- Allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria
- Various allergic skin and respiratory conditions
It effectively reduces allergy-related symptoms, including itching, swelling, rashes, and irritation.
Adults
- 10–20 mg once daily, depending on severity and physician advice
Children
- Above 6 years: 5 mg once daily
Administration
- May be taken with or without food
- Preferably take at the same time each day
- Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew
Continue treatment for the duration prescribed by the physician.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Drowsiness or sleepiness
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Dyspepsia
- Abdominal discomfort
- Rhinitis or sinusitis
- Insomnia
- Weakness (asthenia)
Most side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ebastine or any formulation ingredient
- Patients with cardiac arrhythmias or prolonged QT interval should use with caution
Precautions & Warnings
Use carefully in patients with:
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal insufficiency
- QT interval prolongation
- Pregnancy and lactation
Avoid alcohol intake as it may increase drowsiness.
Patients should be cautious while driving or operating machinery if dizziness or sleepiness occurs.
Drug Interactions
Concurrent use with the following medicines may increase ebastine levels and prolong QT interval:
- Ketoconazole
- Itraconazole
- Clarithromycin
- Erythromycin
Inform the physician about all current medications before starting therapy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use this medicine only under medical supervision after risk-benefit assessment.
