Ebatrol is used for the symptomatic relief of:
- Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria
Ebastine is a long-acting, selective H1-histamine receptor antagonist. After oral administration, it is rapidly absorbed and undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism, converting almost completely into its active metabolite, carebastine. This metabolite provides sustained peripheral antihistaminic activity with minimal central sedation.
Dosage & Administration
Tablet form:
- Adults & adolescents (>12 years): 10 mg once daily
- Children (6–12 years): 5 mg once daily
Drug Interaction
- Increased plasma levels and QTc prolongation risk when used with ketoconazole or erythromycin
- No significant interaction with theophylline, warfarin, cimetidine, diazepam, or alcohol
- Alcohol and diazepam may enhance sedative effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ebastine or any component of the product
Side Effects
Common:
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness
Less common:
- Abdominal pain
- Dyspepsia
- Nausea
- Insomnia
Overdose Management
Even high doses (up to 100 mg/day) have not shown serious toxicity. There is no specific antidote. Management includes gastric lavage if needed, ECG monitoring, and supportive symptomatic treatment.
