Epomax is a laboratory-produced form of human erythropoietin, a natural hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. It has the same amino acid sequence and biological activity as naturally occurring human erythropoietin.
Epomax contains Erythropoietin Alfa, an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) that helps the body produce more red blood cells. It is prescribed to treat anemia caused by:
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD), including patients on dialysis and those not receiving dialysis
- Zidovudine treatment in patients with HIV infection
- Myelosuppressive chemotherapy in cancer patients who are expected to continue chemotherapy for at least two more months
- To reduce the need for donor blood transfusions in patients undergoing certain elective non-cardiac, non-vascular surgeries
