Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole. It suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase proton pump in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing acid production and relieving acid-related symptoms.
Long-term treatment may increase the risk of low magnesium levels and bone fractures. Rare but serious reactions can include severe allergic reactions, liver problems, pancreatitis, microscopic colitis, interstitial nephritis, and serious skin reactions.
Exium 40 contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces gastric acid production. It is used for conditions such as GERD, heartburn, acid-related dyspepsia, peptic ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, and may also be used as part of H. pylori eradication therapy.
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed.
- Delayed-release capsules should generally be taken on an empty stomach, about 1 hour before a meal.
- Swallow the dosage form whole; do not chew, crush, or break it.
- Try to take it at the same time each day.
- If you miss a dose, take it when remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose.
