Description

Generic Name: Ferrous Fumarate 200mg + Folic Acid 200mcg

Manufacturer/Distributor: Aexim Pharmaceuticals Ltd

Indications

It is used to treat iron deficiency in adults and prevent concomitant folic acid deficiency. It is used to maintain maternal hematopoietic function during pregnancy, especially when the diet is abnormal or deficient.

Pharmacology

Iron is the basic component of the human body and is necessary for the formation of hemoglobin and the oxidation process of living tissues. Iron salt can only be used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. The most common causes of iron deficiency anemia are chronic bleeding, nutritional deficiencies, pregnancy or parasitic infections, or iron malabsorption. It is well known that a lack of folic acid during pregnancy can cause megaloblastic anemia. Vitamins cannot be stored in the body and the combination of fetal needs and malnutrition during pregnancy can lead to a deficiency, which can lead to anemia. It has been observed that if the intake is insufficient, the rapid production of red blood cells after iron treatment will deplete the body’s folic acid; the combination of folic acid and ferrous vapor avoids complications. Iron and folic acid are absorbed in the proximal small intestine, especially in the duodenum. Ferrous fumarate and folic acid supplements can supplement iron deficiency. In this way, the anemia process stops. The absorbed iron is taken to the bone marrow tissue that makes up blood cells, where it is used to synthesize hemoglobin.

Dosage & Administration

  • In anemia: The usual dose is one tablet or capsule daily.

In severe or refractory iron deficiency anemia: The usual dose is one tablet or capsule twice daily may be given.

In Pregnancy, it is recommended that the dose should be started at the first antenatal consultation and continued until 3 months after delivery.

Interaction

When ferrous fumarate is used in combination with folic acid and tetracycline, the absorption of both drugs is reduced. Taking antacids at the same time can reduce iron absorption. Taking folic acid can lower the serum levels of anticonvulsants.

Contraindications

Patients with pernicious anemia and non-iron deficiency anemia should not use this drug. The nature and cause of anemia must be determined. Magnesium carbonate trisilicate containing antacids inhibits the absorption of ferrous fumarate and folic acid.

Side Effects

Gastric distress, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, allergic reaction.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is no contraindication in pregnancy and lactation.

Precautions & Warnings

It may not be advisable to take ferrous fumarate and folic acid during the first trimester of pregnancy. Few pregnant women are not protected by physiological doses of folic acid. If anemia persists after the use of ferrous fumarate and folic acid for prevention, the patient should be further examined. Some patients after a gastrectomy show iron malabsorption. Caution should be exercised when treating patients with peptic ulcers.

Storage Conditions

Keep in a dry place, away from light.Â
