Simethicone is a superb and powerful antiflatulent, treating windy colic, abdominal distention, fullness, gas, and flatulence. It is used to treat the uncomfortable signs of too much gas in the digestive system. Such gas is typically brought on by eating meals that don’t agree with one another or by swallowing too much air. Simethicone drop operates in the stomach and intestines and is particularly useful for newborns. Simethicone makes it possible to belch or pass flatus to easily liberate and eliminate the gas.

Pharmacology

Simethicone is used as an antiflatulent to treat symptoms such as upper GI bloating, pressure, fullness, or a stuffed feeling that are typically associated with gas. Simethicone’s antifoaming characteristics are the basis for its clinical application. The GI tract’s mucous-surrounded gas pockets are dispersed and prevented from forming thanks to its antifoaming activity, which reduces flatulence. Simethicone alters the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, causing them to coalesce. As a result, gas is released and removed more readily through belching or passing flatus. Simethicone can be administered to ease postoperative gas symptoms and help the GI tract eliminate gas. Simethicone can also be used before a gastroscopy to improve visibility and before an intestinal radiograph to lessen gas shadows.

Dosage & Administration

Take it before bedtime and after meals. can be administered alongside a baby’s meal. Before each usage, give the bottle a good shake.

Children less than 2 years of age: 20 mg (0.3 ml Simethicone Pediatric Drops) 4 times daily up to 240 mg/day (3.6 ml Simethicone Pediatric Drops).

Children 2-12 years of age: 40 mg (0.6 ml Simethicone Pediatric Drops) 4 times daily.

Adults: 40-125 mg or 1-3 Simethicone chewable tablets; 4 times daily, up to 500 mg/day (12 Simethicone chewable tablets).

Interaction

There is no proof that simethicone affects how other medications work. Antacids that absorb silicone, including magnesium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide, lessen the deforming effect of simethicone.

Side Effects

Simethicone is physiologically inert and no adverse effect has been noted after oral ingestion.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant women: No data are available to suggest any harmful effects.

Lactating mother: Excretion of simethicone in breast milk has not been established, and would be most unlikely.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not exceed 12 doses per day except under the advice and supervision of a physician.
