Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole-class agent with both antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. It exerts its effect by entering anaerobic organisms where its nitro group is reduced. The reduced compound binds to DNA, disrupting nucleic acid synthesis and causing microbial cell death.
Flamyd is used to manage and prevent a range of infections, including:
- Post-surgical infections caused by anaerobic bacteria (e.g., Bacteroides species, anaerobic streptococci)
- Conditions such as sepsis, bacteremia, peritonitis, brain or pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and infected surgical wounds
- Urogenital trichomoniasis
- Bacterial vaginosis (non-specific vaginitis)
- All types of amoebiasis—intestinal, extra-intestinal, and asymptomatic carriers
- Giardiasis
- Acute ulcerative gingivitis
- Anaerobic infections in leg ulcers and pressure sores
- Acute dental infections caused by anaerobes
- Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
