Flecard tablets belong to the class of anti-arrhythmic medicines (Arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart’s normal rhythm is disturbed, causing it to beat too quickly, too slowly, or in an irregular pattern.), which help regulate the heart’s rate and rhythm. They are prescribed for the treatment of:
- Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)
- Tachycardia (abnormally fast heart rate)
- Atrial fibrillation (rapid, irregular contractions of the heart’s atria)
Prompt and effective management of these conditions is essential to prevent the development of more serious cardiac complications.
Flecainide works by blocking fast inward sodium channels, slowing their recovery during diastole and thereby prolonging the heart’s refractory period. It shortens action potential duration in Purkinje fibers while extending action potentials in atrial and ventricular muscle by inhibiting delayed rectifier potassium channels. Additionally, flecainide blocks ryanodine receptors, reducing calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and decreasing cellular depolarization.
