- Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by reducing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, allowing excess glucose to be eliminated through urine.
- Metformin is a biguanide that decreases glucose production in the liver, reduces intestinal glucose absorption, and improves insulin sensitivity, helping the body utilize glucose more effectively.
Glifo-M is a combination of Empagliflozin and Metformin, indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It is used in patients whose blood sugar remains inadequately controlled with Metformin alone, in combination with other antidiabetic medicines, or in those already receiving Empagliflozin and Metformin as separate tablets.
Treatment should be individualized based on efficacy and tolerability. Glifo-M is generally taken twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects associated with Metformin. Dose adjustments should be made gradually.
- Patients switching from Metformin may start with a combination containing Empagliflozin 5 mg and a similar daily Metformin dose.
- Patients switching from Empagliflozin may start with Metformin 500 mg and the same Empagliflozin dose.
- Those already taking both medicines separately may switch to equivalent combination doses.
The maximum recommended daily dose is Empagliflozin 25 mg and Metformin 2000 mg.
