Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, lowers blood glucose by stimulating insulin release from functioning pancreatic beta cells. It improves beta-cell sensitivity to glucose and has additional effects, such as:
- Reducing hepatic glucose production.
- Increasing peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin.
- Enhancing glucose uptake.
The blood sugar-lowering effect of a single Glimirid dose can last 24 hours in non-fasting diabetic patients.
Glimirid Tablet is used for:
- Lowering blood glucose in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Type II diabetes) when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
- Combination therapy with metformin when monotherapy with Glimirid or metformin alone does not provide adequate blood sugar control.
- Combination therapy with insulin when oral hypoglycemic agents, diet, and exercise do not effectively control blood sugar levels.
Note: Combining Glimirid with insulin may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
